October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

breast cancer

More than 240,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and over 40,000 women will die from breast cancer (National Cancer Institute, 2016).

Early Detection

Mammograms are the best way to detect breast cancer early.  Be sure to talk to you doctor about beginning breast cancer screening by age 40 if you are of normal risk.  Women with high risk factors (such as genetics or family history) should begin screening sooner.

Screening recommendations by American Cancer Society and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Breast Cancer Signs and Symptoms

  • New lump in the breast or armpit
  • Thickening or selling of the breast
  • Irritation or dimpling of breast skin
  • Redness or flaky skin on the nipple or breast
  • Pulling or pain in the nipple area
  • Any change in size or shape of the breast
  • Pain in the breast

(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016)

Any concerns with your breast or breast area should be discussed with your doctor.  It is important to be familiar with your breast so you can recognize a change in the breast.  These changes should be reported to your doctor.

Can’t afford a breast screening?

If you are uninsured or underinsured with a limited income, you may be eligible for a free mammogram.  The New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection Program offers FREE breast, cervical, colorectal and/or prostate cancer screenings.  Early detection is the best protection!
