January is cervical cancer awareness month. With our new year resolutions to be healthy it is also important to go to our routine doctor visits. For women this includes an annual gynecological visit in which a breast exam and pelvic/pap exam is included.
Fortunately the pap test has decreased the number of women getting cervical cancer. By screening women and finding abnormal cells early we are able to decrease cervical cancer rates. Many time the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is common cause of cervical cancer. Take a listen to the cervical cancer PSA for more a brief explanation.
Cervical Cancer is Preventable PSA
Unfortunately women still get cervical cancer and they may even get it at a younger age than other cancers. Research has found that HPV can be prevented by getting an HPV vaccination. The recommended age is age 11 for both girls and boys. (Note: HPV has been linked to other cancers such as oral and anal cancers.)
